INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Johnny Gill, the celebrated singer and two-time Grammy Award nominee, joined WISH-TV this week to discuss his 43-year career in music and his latest single, “A Dance, A Kiss.” The appearance coincides with Black Music Month, a time to honor influen
tial Black artists and their contributions to music.
Fresh from a trip to Paris and marking his 60th birthday, Gill shared candid thoughts on his evolving relationship with music creation. He revealed that recording independently has revitalized his love for the craft.
“I used to hate recording because of the pressure. Now, I record when I want and rest when I want,” Gill said. “It’s given me a new love for making music.”
Reflecting on his roots, Gill recounted how his early gospel music foundation launched him into a storied career. Much of his fanbase stems from his time with the influential RB group New Edition. Despite more than 1 million votes advocating for the group’s induction into the Rock Roll Hall of Fame, they have not yet been honored there — a fact Gill acknowledges with hope for the future.
“Looking back, I appreciate being present and taking mental snapshots of these moments,” Gill said. “I’m grateful for the friendships and experiences over the years.”
Gill describes his new single as a romantic, infectious song that celebrates love and life’s simple pleasures. After 43 years in the industry, he continues to create music that resonates with audiences.
“The song is self-explanatory,” Gill explained. “It’s about love — something we can never get enough of. It reminds us to appreciate each other and the simple things we all need.”
When asked about his biggest takeaway from four decades in the music industry, Gill emphasized the importance of living in the moment.
“As a kid, you’re just in the moment. You don’t think about what’s going to happen 43 years later,” Gill said. “But now, for every accomplishment I get, I take it in. I take a minute or two and just enjoy it.”
Gill noted that his favorite song from his extensive catalog is “Fairweather Friends,” citing the meaning behind the lyrics and the energy of the music.
“Everyone will say ‘My, My, My’ because it’s as big as it is,” Gill said. “But ‘Fairweather Friends’ is something special to me.”
