An investigation is underway, police said, after a man arrived at a Philly hospital overnight in a bullet-ridden vehicle after he had been critically injured in a shooting that happened near a rec. center in East Germantown. According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incid ent unfolded at about 12:30 a.m. on Friday as officers arrived to the scene of a reported gunfire along the 5600 block of Ardleigh Street to find evidence of a shooting but no victim. Small said that, at the scene, investigating officers discovered a pool of blood and, at least, 17 spent shell casings. However, as officers were investigating the scene, they learned a 25-year-old man, who is believed to have been involved in this incident, arrived at a nearby hospital after he had been shot in the legs and lower back. The vehicle that the victim arrived at the hospital in, Small said, had been shot at least five times. “That vehicle has at least five bullet holes: one in the front, three on the passenger side and one in the rear,” said Small. “So, we believe the victim may have been in the vehicle when he was shot, since this vehicle was shot at least five times.” The victim, Small said, has been hospitalized in critical condition. Also, he said, police have the vehicle and were questioning the driver to learn more about the incident. At the scene, which Small noted is right next to the Lonnie Young Recreation Center, investigators recovered surveillance footage of a light-colored or white sedan that sped from the scene headed northbound on Ardleigh Street before turning east onto Chelten Avenue. He said the vehicle may have been involved in this incident. Small also said that investigators were still working to determine if the recreation center was involved in this incident. A resident, he said, told investigators that they could hear an argument shortly before gunshots erupted near the rec. center, leading police to believe the shooting happened as a result of a fight. But, Small said, an investigation into this incident was ongoing and police were continuing to review surveillance footage from the scene. This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available. ...read more read less
