Hate pet rent fees? San Diego city leaders to consider ordinance that could end pet rent
Jun 25, 2026
San Diego has long been one of the most expensive rental markets in the country. According to the city of San Diego, as of May 2026, the average rent in the city is approximately $3,027.
Pet rental fees only add to that cost. That can sometimes force renters to make tough choices with their anima
ls.
Next week, San Diego city leaders are looking to make it easier for renters to know up-front what they’re agreeing to when signing a lease.
On June 30 at 2 p.m., City Council will be discussing an ordinance that looks to cut down on price gouging and increase transparency in the rental process. It limits fees that landlords can charge applicants and tenants, ranging from deposits to recurring and late fees.
It also looks to ban pet rent.
The average pet deposit in San Diego can cost you $437, according to information gathered from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The average pet rent is about $51. The financial roadblock created by pet rent fees is one of the leading reasons people are forced to surrender their pets, according to the San Diego Humane Society.
The shelter is hoping to get this ordinance passed, so they can keep families and their pets together.
The measure would not stop landlords from limiting the size or breeds of pets allowed and does not force them to accept pets if they choose not to.
Landlords would also still be allowed to charge tenants for any damage caused by pets.
