Storm chances slowly increase into the late week
Jun 24, 2026
It was another delightful late June day across Central and Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday as high pressure dominated our weather once again. With abundant sunshine across the region and a light southwest wind in place, afternoon highs jumped a few degrees into the low 80s for afternoon highs. W
ith humidity levels still on the low side for this time of the year, it was a comfortable day to spend some time outdoors. Hopefully you took advantage of the quiet weather as some changes are on the way.
As the area of high pressure responsible for the nice weather the last few days gives way to the east on Thursday, the door will be open for a frontal system to drop into the Ohio Valley. This will bring a return of scattered shower and thunderstorm chances here in the commonwealth. It does appear that a good chunk of the day will be rain free with a few storms firing as we hit the late afternoon and early evening hours with the front drawing a little closer. It should be another warm day and humidity levels will be on the rise as well so it should feel much more like summer across the Bluegrass. Afternoon highs should climb into the mid-80s, which is right around average for late June.
We’ll shift back into an unsettled weather pattern as we close out the week on Friday as the aforementioned front drops into the commonwealth and stalls out. With plenty of available moisture in place, we could see some heavier rain in a few locations but the bigger concern may be the “training” of the rain and storms with the same areas receiving sustained moderate to heavy rain over a short period of time. The most favorable spot for this scenario should be along and north of the I-64 corridor on Friday before the front shifts farther south as we kick off the weekend on Saturday. Flood Watches may be needed for parts of Central Kentucky given the recent bouts of heavy rain along with the potential of a 2″-4″ rainfall while drought stricken Southern Kentucky could use a good soaking. Afternoon highs will vary depending on where the rain sets up with low 80s under the clouds and rain with mid to upper 80s where it stays a bit drier.
A more summer-like pattern will begin to kick in late this weekend as the frontal boundary gets pushed to our northeast as an upper level ridge builds into the Ohio Valley. This will mark a return of some heat and humidity into the early part of next week as we put the finishing touches on the month of June. Afternoon highs should surge into the low to even mid-90s and with a good bit of humidity around, we could see our heat indices climb toward the century mark and beyond. It will be a case of where you’ll need to slow it down during the hottest part of the day and hydrate properly. With the recent rains and vegetation a little more green/lush here in the Bluegrass, that may temper the heat somewhat but it will still be a hotter stretch. The only relief may come in the form of an isolated storm during the afternoon heat but most spots should be dry.
