Congresswoman Julia Letlow — an overwhelming victor during the Republican primary in May — faces opposition from state Treasurer John Fleming. Letlow, who was the focal point of attack ads by Cassidy and Fleming, benefited heavily from President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Fleming, meanwhile, surprised pundits with his runner-up finish, particularly due to considerably less money for his campaign than that of his two opponents. Letlow dominated the primary with 177,224 votes (45.2 percent), while Fleming emerged runner-up with 110,962 votes (28.3 percent). Cassidy, who was first elected in 2015, drew 95,494 votes (24.4 percent). The Baton Rouge physician defeated Democrat Mary Landrieu for the seat in 2014. His win marked the first time a Democrat lost a U.S. Senate seat since 1932. DEMOCRATIC PARTY: On the Democratic ticket, Ferriday resident Jamie Davis and New Orleanian Gary Crockett Davis tallied 163,507 votes (47.4 percent) in the primary, while Garry Crockett notched the runner-up spot with 90,764 votes (26.3 percent). Only 284 votes separated Crockett from third-place finisher Nick Albres, who had 26.2 percent of the vote.
