Even before the opening whistle blew, father and son Gus and Dan Roletti knew that Argentina was going to beat Austria in Monday’s World Cup match. “2-0. That’s the score,” Gus predicted soon bef ore 1 p.m. as he sat with a half-dozen family members at a large table inside The Trinity Bar Restaurant at 157 Orange St. The Rolettis were two of around 30 people who showed up to Trinity Monday to watch Argentina square off against Austria. Originally from Argentina, the Rolettis now live in Philadelphia. They were in New Haven on Monday to visit family. And to watch soccer. Why did they think Argentina would beat Austria 2-0? “Because they have Messi,” Gus said about Argentina’s star player. “And because Messi’s the best.” Trinity sits right next door to Pitkin Plaza, where the Town Green District has been hosting outdoor watch parties as part of their “World Cup Village.” There was no outdoor screening on Monday thanks to the rainy weather. Instead, soccer fans like the Rolettis gathered inside Trinity to cheer on their team. “It’s still busy but it hasn’t been like that always,” said Shane Carty, one of Trinity’s owners. “You should have seen how it was last Thursday when Mexico played, it was packed. I couldn’t even move around the bar.”  Still, the World Cup has been very good for business, according to Carty. Carty said that when summer comes, the city is usually empty because many students leave. “Thanks to this World Cup, every single place around town is packed and to be honest, this is great for business. It has been fucking fantastic,” said Carty. As to who will win the World Cup, Carty was confident about one thing: the U.S. will not even go into the quarterfinals. “No dark horse, the U.S. ain’t nothing,” said Carty. “For God’s sake, we don’t even like soccer all that much. Besides, the only reason why the U.S. is doing pretty good is mainly because they have been playing against not very good teams.”  He floated France, Argentina, and Spain as possible finalists, though he added that it’s still early to say for sure. Both France and Spain have yet to qualify for the round of 32. Also at Trinity to watch the game on Monday were Gaby Rodriguez and Roberto Di Donato from Texas, both graduate students at Yale. Rodriguez, a Cuban theater master’s student, came with family and Peruvian friends to watch the match.  “I’ve been watching soccer since I was a kid,” said Rodriguez. “It’s been my favorite sport ever since.”  Di Donato, a drama student, was confident heading into the match.  “I really think Argentina is going for another cup,” said Di Donato.  By the time the final whistle blew, the predictions inside Trinity became true. Argentina 2, Austria 0, just as the Rolettis predicted.  The post Argentina Beats Austria, As Gus Dan Predicted appeared first on New Haven Independent. ...read more read less
