It was a delightful finish to the week on Friday weather wise across Central and Eastern Kentucky, especially after all the wet and stormy weather that we dealt with on Thursday. With high pressure pushing the front that created all the severe and wet weather to our south, drier air worked into the commonwealth on the heels of a northwest breeze, bringing a nice sunny Friday along with warm afternoon highs right around the 80 degree mark. It was a delightful day to be outdoors and the timing was perfect with many folks getting an early start to the weekend Friday thanks to the Juneteenth holiday. The spring season officially wraps up on Saturday and it appears that Mother Nature will cooperate nicely. With high pressure overhead and more sunshine expected, it should be another fantastic day across the commonwealth. Just make sure and load up on the sunscreen if you are going to be outside for any length of time as it should be easy to catch a quick burn given the sunny and warm conditions on tap. Afternoon highs should be pretty close to average for the final day of spring with most spots topping out in the low to mid-80s. The Summer Solstice occurs at 4:24 am Eastern on Sunday morning, marking the official start of astronomical summer. Heading into Father’s Day on Sunday the next storm system will be approaching from the west but much of the data is now hinting at holding off the rain and storm chances until late afternoon this far east. As a result, we should be mainly dry for much of the area until late afternoon/early evening so many spots should be in good shape for outdoor plans as we celebrate all the dads out there. With the delayed arrival of the rain chances, afternoon highs should reach the mid-80s for the first day of summer so plan accordingly. Showers and storms will ramp up Sunday night and into Monday so it should be a bit damp and unsettled to begin next week, which hopefully will bring some beneficial rain to drought stricken Southern Kentucky. Afternoon highs will back off a few degrees with the clouds and rain around so look for temperatures to top out in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. There is a low end Level 1 severe risk (out of 5) from the Storm Prediction Center for late Sunday with the potential of some damaging winds with any storms but the greater threat should stay to our west. As the front tries to slowly sink to the south while weakening, our rain and storm chances should diminish with mainly dry conditions during that window. Tuesday and Wednesday should feature some sunshine and pleasant temperatures with highs in the upper 70s and low-80s. Another weak frontal boundary will try to push into the Ohio Valley during the latter half of next week so a few pop-up showers/storms driven by the warmth of the day may be back on the table but we aren’t looking at anything as far as widespread rainfall. Temperatures will remain pretty close to average for late June with highs in the low to mid-80s. ABC 36 Storm Team 3 Day Forecast Friday night: Fair skies and pleasant.
