Ed Hamilton created the statue of York that stands in downtown Louisville.(Wayne Tuckson / Frazier History Museum)On June 16, 2026 the Frazier Kentucky History Museum and several community partners paid tribute to one of the many enslaved people who were critical in Lewis and Clark’s notorious ex peditions across the continent. “The Legacy of York” was held at George Rogers Clark Park, once the home of William Clark who enslaved York, and included presentations on the history of Juneteenth, the relationship of Clark and York, and the impact of their legacy from Louisville artist Ed Hamilton and poet Frank X Walker.Hamilton discusses the creation of the bronze sculpture of York that sits on the Belvedere, and Walker reads several poems that capture the life of York from his collections “Buffalo Dance: The Journey of York” and “When Winter Come: The Ascension of York.”Also at the event, Mayor Craig Greenberg honored Hamilton with a key to the city, and Locust Grove president and CEO Jessica Dawkins announced a permanent resting place for York at Cave Hill Cemetery.Listen live on 89.3 WFPL Friday at 8 p.m. or stream the special above.This special was produced from audio gathered at “The Legacy of York” by Daniel Gilliam with audio production from Brad Yost. ...read more read less
