6-18-26-Madam Walker Legacy Center INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A two-day celebration honoring nearly a century of Black excellence is coming to historic Indiana Avenue. The event, scheduled for June 19 and 20, highlights the 99th a nniversary of the iconic Walker Theatre, a symbol of the city’s rich cultural heritage. Presented by The Indianapolis Foundation, Legacy Fest shines a spotlight on music, culture, community and the enduring legacy of Black entrepreneurship and artistry. “This celebration is about more than just the theatre. It’s about honoring our past, uplifting our community and inspiring future generations,” said Kristian Little Stricklen, president of the Madam Walker Legacy Center. “The Legacy Center remains the sole entity on Indiana Avenue still operating in its original state, and we are proud to keep that heritage alive as we approach the centennial celebration in 2027.” Legacy Fest Benefit Concert — June 19 The festivities open June 19 with the Legacy Fest Benefit Concert at the historic Walker Theatre. Headlining is Grammy-winning producer Teddy Riley, renowned as the creator of New Jack Swing and the producer behind Michael Jackson’s “Dangerous” album. The concert lineup also features Guy 2.0, Wreckx-n-Effect and other notable artists. This exclusive event offers a rare opportunity to experience iconic sounds in a historic setting. Riley, whose production credits span more than 1,000 songs, has shaped the sound of contemporary RB, hip-hop, gospel, soul and pop since the early 1980s. His work on Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time” and the “Dangerous” album, which sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, cemented his status as a musical innovator. Free Block Party — June 20 On June 20, the celebration continues with a free block party along Indiana Avenue from 1 to 7 p.m. The street will close between Martin Luther King Jr. Street and Blackford Street to accommodate community festivities. DJ Grapevine, D’yshe Mansfield, Twelve and Sounds by Cam will provide a dynamic musical backdrop. The block party invites families and visitors to enjoy food trucks, a variety of vendors and family-friendly activities, including a dedicated kids zone. Ample parking is available for attendees near the Purdue Indianapolis campus or along Senate Avenue. Supporting the Legacy Proceeds from Legacy Fest 2026 invest directly in the community. Funding supports entrepreneurship, education, arts and culture programs, notably the Legacy Leaders initiative that cultivates young leaders in Indianapolis. “This event embodies the spirit of Indiana Avenue’s past and its promise moving forward,” Little Stricklen added. “It connects us to the generations that came before and fuels the growth and creativity of those who will carry the legacy into the future.” As Legacy Fest 2026 closes, anticipation builds toward the 100th anniversary of the Madam Walker Legacy Center and Walker Theatre in 2027 — a milestone that promises even greater celebrations of history, culture and community impact.
