The World Cup has brought tens of thousands of soccer fans to the temporarily named San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara so far, topping local transit ridership records and resulting in some wait times for passengers.
So far, two World Cup matches have been played at the stadium, with f
our more matches coming up.
Wednesday, Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority announced that 39,600 passengers rode VTA on Tuesday night for the Austria-Jordan match, a new ridership record. The previous ridership record – 37,000 passengers – was set during Saturday’s match between Qatar and Switzerland.
VTA noted these numbers were higher than the ridership for the Super Bowl in February and the Taylor Swift Eras Tour shows.
“Consistently increasing over the last few events we’ve had at Levi’s because people are realizing that it’s an efficient, affordable way to get to the stadium and avoid traffic and high parking prices,” VTA said in a statement.
But some fans attending the World Cup matches noted the high ridership seemed to translate to longer lines getting to transit. In particular, fans noted long lines to take VTA after matches, saying that they had to wait for multiple trains before finding one with enough space to take them back.
