A San Jose police officer acted lawfully in fatally shooting a heavily armed man dressed in military fatigues after he fired at officers, prosecutors said Wednesday. Police were called to Karim Khan’s home on July 6 “after his parents said that their mentally ill, 37-year-old son was being vi olent with them,” the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office said. The man was armed with a pump action shotgun, a bolt action rifle, a revolver and a semi-automatic pistol, and disregarded attempts by police to get him to surrender, according to prosecutors. “His conduct that afternoon placed the officers in an impossible situation that required lethal force in self-defense,” prosecutors said. Footage from a body-worn camera showed Khan and Officer Sebastian Wisniewski firing almost simultaneously, according to prosecutors. The district attorney’s office investigates fatal encounters with law enforcement to determine whether lethal force was legal.
