A former employee accused of shooting two young men at Wilmington Hospital in Delaware, killing one victim and injuring the other, had just been fired from his job earlier that day, a source confirmed with NBC10. The shooting occurred on Tuesday, June 16, around 3:30 p.m. at Wilmington Hospital along the 500 block of West 14th Street in Wilmington, Delaware. Police said a gunman – identified as John Wallace-Bey, 23, of New Castle, Delaware – shot two 19-year-old men inside the hospital. Workers told NBC10 the shooting occurred near the hospital’s cafeteria. John Wallace-Bey A spokesperson for ChristianaCare confirmed with NBC10 that Wallace-Bey as well as the two shooting victims were all employees at Wilmington Hospital. A source told NBC10 that Wallace-Bey was fired from the hospital earlier that day before the shooting took place. One of the victims died from his injuries while another was placed in critical but stable condition. Officials have not yet released the name of the man who died. They also described the incident as an isolated and targeted shooting. The shooting prompted a massive police response to the hospital which was placed on lockdown. SkyForce10 was over the scene as hospital workers evacuated the building while holding their arms up. Investigators determined the gunman fled in a white Toyota RAV4, a law enforcement source told NBC10. Police used various technology methods to track the vehicle from Wilmington to the 800 block of West Wellens Street in Philadelphia, according to the source. Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 shows the RAV4 pulling up to the location in Philadelphia at 6:21 p.m. on Tuesday. In the video, a woman approaches the driver and shortly after another woman exits the vehicle. The two women then walk away. The source said police then spotted Wallace-Bey exit a home in the area and enter the passenger side of a 2020 Toyota Sienna, which was operating as an Uber. Police then stopped the Uber at 9th Street and Lindley Avenue in Philadelphia a short time later, the source said. Wallace-Bey was taken into custody and transported to the Philadelphia Police Department. He will be extradited to Delaware where he will be charged with murder, attempted murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. Video also showed a Philadelphia police vehicle with flashing lights on pulling up behind the RAV4 around 9:40 p.m. Tuesday. A tow truck then arrives a few minutes later and the RAV4 is pulled away as police follow. Wallace-Bey did not have any legal issues prior to Tuesday’s shooting, according to court documents. The man’s neighbor, John Richardson, described him as quiet and introverted. “I was shocked, like, when you talk about things happening close to home, literally right next door,” he said. “So, I was completely shocked and it’s just an unfortunate situation that lives were taken yesterday.” Vynisha Richardson, an employee at Wilmington Hospital, told NBC10 Wallace-Bey was an IT intern whom she often saw at work. She told NBC10 security was much tighter at the hospital on Wednesday. Workers told NBC10 hospital visitors go through metal detectors at the hospital’s main entrance but employees can show a badge at a certain entrance and avoid that safety measure. “As of yesterday, I think that needs to change,” Vynisha Richardson said on Wednesday. “There should be metal detectors and maybe a constable or security guard at every entrance to this hospital.” The lockdown was eventually lifted at Wilmington Hospital and it is currently fully operational. Questions remain regarding how the gunman got inside and why alerts were not promptly sent out after the shooting.
