Jane Brown will step aside later this year as president and CEO of the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation after 31 years of leading the private foundation, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life in Baltimore. The foundation announced Monday that it has launched its search for Brown’ s successor. “While I am immensely proud of everything the Foundation has accomplished over the last three decades, it is time for a new generation of leadership and ‘fresh eyes’ to guide us into the decades to come,” Brown said in a statement. “We are eager to speak to experienced applicants with a clear vision to carry the Foundation’s values forward and continue to expand our impact across Baltimore.” The new president and CEO will work with the board’s treasurer, the Investment Committee and its investment advisors to manage the foundation’s $147 million endowment, according to the job listing. This leader will also oversee the organization’s budget for operations and grant awards. The foundation was established in 1991 by Dr. Robert W. Deutsch to invest in the city’s neighborhoods. In 2025, the foundation awarded 98 grants totaling $4.8 million to local organizations and initiatives focusing on arts and culture and community development. Brown’s tenure as the foundation’s president and CEO included the founding of the Baltimore Arts Realty Corporation, a nonprofit real estate development corporation which creates safe, affordable, and quality spaces for Baltimore artists to work through projects like Open Works and Motor House. Brown developed the foundation’s annual Rubys Artist Awards program, which supports the financial and professional development of local emerging and mid-career artists. Cara Ober, who founded the local arts and culture news outlet BmoreArt in 2007, received early support from the Deutsch Foundation. “Working with the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation has allowed BmoreArt to grow from an artist-run blog into a professional online and print magazine with a national reach,” Ober said in a statement published on the foundation’s website. “It has always been our goal to promote the work of Baltimore artists to a local and national audience and to pay high caliber writers to produce vivid, critical, and widely consumed content. We have been able to expand to produce a biannual full color print journal, The BmoreArt Journal of Art + Ideas, and to create several speaker series including The ReModel series, providing free professional development to Baltimore’s artists.” The job listing does not list a salary for the next president and CEO, but says “Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience.” In addition to a resume, the listing asks applicants to answer why they are interested in leading the foundation; what has prepared them to be the organization’s next leader; how they would seek to help solve a major challenge facing Baltimore in the next five years; and which Baltimore-based nonprofit organization they would choose to give a signficiant personal gift and why. Interested parties must submit their application by July 15. The foundation is based at 2519 N. Charles St. in Baltimore, Maryland. ...read more read less
