ott near 27th and Superior.
According to LFR Battalion Chief Jim Bopp, the fire call came in around 6:50pm Monday about the fire and explosion. By the time the first arriving fire crews got to the scene, they could see flames. The fire was going up the outside of the building and into the attic space, according to Bopp.

A primary search of the building was done and after the third floor was searched, the roof started to collapse, and Bopp added that’s when firefighters switched from offensive mode to defensive.
As of 9pm Monday, LFR reported no injuries. Chief Bopp said the second and third floors of the hotel collapsed.
Aaron Schmoldt is an employee of the Fairfield Inn and told KFOR News he was alerted about the fire and pulled the switch for the alarms in the building. He then grabbed a fire extinguisher to help put the flames out.
“In the midst of us putting (the fire) out, we saw the fire just kind of come shooting out the side of the building. We ran away and in just within a matter of a second, it exploded.” Schmoldt said.

Victor Randazzo is in Lincoln working his way cross country back to Las Vegas and was staying at the hotel. He told KFOR News he was taking a shower at the time the fire broke out.
“I heard the commotion, with things going off…the alarm,” Randazzo said. “I looked out and I could smell the smoke. I got dressed as fast as I could and ran for my life.”
LFR will have crews on fire watch through the night and into the early morning hours Tuesday, in case the fire would rekindle. The cause of the fire will be under investigation, until it’s deemed safe to get inside the building.
The Fairfield Inn fire was the third consecutive working incident of the day for LFR. An hour before that blaze, firefighters were called to a confirmed fire at Reimers-Kauffman, 6200 Cornhusker Highway, for a two-alarm fire with the building being taken down. The person who called in the fire reported they were cutting pipes and it sparked the blaze. The fire was soon under control.
The first fire call was to a home on fire in Belmont. LFR responded to a home off of 9th and Irving, shortly after 3:30pm Monday, where a fire started in the garage and spread a little bit into the attic space. Investigators say there’s heavy smoke damage in the home and two people were home at the time. Both were able to evacuate and pets in the home were rescued.
According to LFR, an 11-year-old boy who mows the lawn for the people living there noticed the fire and called 911 and notified the elderly people living there to get out.
The cause of the house fire remains under investigation.
