It was a pleasant start to the week across Central and Eastern Kentucky, especially by mid-June standards as an area of high pressure built into the Ohio Valley. With mainly sunny skies and a northwest breeze in place, temperatures stayed a good 8 to 10 degrees below average for this time of the year with afternoon highs only reaching the mid-70s in most spots. It was very pleasant with the break from the muggy air we’ve seen lately so hopefully you had a chance to get outdoors for a bit and enjoy it. It should be a pretty nice Tuesday overall as we’ll start the day with pleasantly cool morning lows in the low-50s. With plenty of sunshine expected and the area of high pressure shifting to the east quickly, which will kick in a southwest wind, temperatures should recover nicely through the day as afternoon highs climb back into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. There will be a fast moving frontal system that is expected to dive through the Ohio Valley into the evening hours so we could see a few showers or storms squeezed out heading into Tuesday night, although much of the area should remain dry. Heading into the mid-week, we should be in between systems briefly on Wednesday so most spots should be in line for a dry day with some sunshine and afternoon highs into the low to mid-80s. An area of low pressure along with a trailing cold front looks to impact the region Wednesday night and into Thursday, bringing a better chance for showers and storms to the commonwealth. The timing of the front should work to our advantage as far as keeping the strong to severe storm threat in check with the best dynamics and set-up remaining to our north and closer to the wave of low pressure. The Storm Prediction Center does have the northern half of the state in a Level 1 severe risk (out of 5) for Wednesday night but that’s to essentially to cover any possible damaging wind threat. Otherwise look for occasional rain and storms on Thursday as the front presses through with afternoon highs still in the low-80s despite the clouds and rain around. Closing out the week on Friday and heading into the weekend, we should be set up for another quiet stretch of weather with drier air working back into the Ohio Valley. While a few lingering showers may be possible on Friday morning, look for some sunshine back in the mix as the day wears on with temperatures dropping back a few degrees into the upper 70s for highs. Saturday looks good for any outdoor plans as we roll into Father’s Day weekend so you’ll want to take advantage of that. With mostly sunny skies and highs in the low-80s, it should be a great way to close out the spring season officially as the Summer Solstice occurs at 4:24 am Eastern time on Sunday, marking the start of summer. Heading into Father’s Day, another system should be rolling in from the west so you may have to dodge a few showers and storms for any outdoor activities as we celebrate dads everywhere. The scattered rain chances should hang around to kick off early next week with highs remaining in the low-80s. ABC 36 Storm Team 3 Day Forecast Monday night: Mostly clear and pleasantly cool.
