Security is getting tight in and around the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara ahead of the city’s first World Cup game on Saturday.
The FBI has been coordinating with state and local law enforcement agencies for more than a year to keep the venue and the surrounding area safe. The F
BI security plan is called. “Operation Goal Kick”.
On Friday, agents were doing another tour of the facility, checking to make sure the long term planning will be ready for the games on Saturday, including keeping fans alert to threats.
“There will be opportunities for fraud, for counterfeit tickets, as well as, we do want to emphasize, that this is a no fly zone for UAS, or drones, so a 3-mile radius, three hours before and after the game, and a 3000-foot ceiling will be the restricted zone” FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Schelble said.
“We will have federal prosecutors in our intelligence centers, we will have ground enforcement teams that will be able to enforce this.” FBI assistant of Special Agent in Charge Matt Cobo said.
The FBI’s Operation Goal Kick has, what the agency calls, three pillars:
Partnerships including task forces focusing on violent as well as organized crime and human trafficking and child exploitation.
Intelligence, working with local emergency centers such as Santa Clara police, San Jose police, and the Santa Clara County Sheriff Department.
And utilizing its “Expertise”, offering resources such as bomb technicians.
The FBI says there will be thorough, intense security, but don’t want to intrude on the fan experience.
“You won’t see us, but we will definitely be out there,” Cobo said. “ And our main function here is to work with our partners to ensure that we have a safe and enjoyable games for everybody involved.”
The FBI also emphasizes that fans can help by reporting anything they might consider suspicious behavior. Although law-enforcement plans to stay low-key, they say it shouldn’t be hard to spot someone who can help.
