A memorial continues to grow in South Philadelphia where 22-year-old Billy Schmidt was shot and killed, just steps from his front door. According to his father, Schmidt had just left a bar after watching the NBA Finals with friends when he was shot across the street from the home he shared with h is father. Léelo en español aquí. Surveillance video obtained by NBC10 captured the moments leading up to the shooting. In the video, Schmidt can be heard pleading for his cell phone. “Give me my phone,” Schmidt said. Seconds later, he was shot in the chest near his home. Bill Schmidt described the pain of losing his son. “It’s been brutal,” he said. Billy Schmidt was a student at Penn State and was expected to graduate in the fall. According to his father, he was a communications major who hoped to work for the Philadelphia Eagles after graduation. Penn State released the following statement on the passing of Schmidt: “We are heartbroken this morning to learn of the tragic death of William Schmidt, and we share are deepest condolences with his family and friends. William was a fourth semester student from Philadelphia studying digital journalism and media at Penn State World Campus. Penn State Student Affairs is reaching out to William’s family to provide support.” Roman Catholic High School shared in a post to honor Schmidt, who graduated from the school in 2021: “Today, we remember and honor the life of Billy Schmidt, a beloved member of the Roman class of 2021, whose kindness, character, and spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. We join his family, friends, classmates, and loved ones in mourning this heartbreaking loss and pray that Billy may rest in eternal peace. He will always remain in our hearts and in the brotherhood of Roman Catholic High School. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen” “He was just a great kid. He never had a problem with anybody. He was just the nicest kid you could ever meet. It’s heartbreaking,” Bill Schmidt said. Investigators continue to work on the case. Officers from Philadelphia’s 1st District visited the Schmidt family home Sunday to offer condolences.
