City police made three gun-related arrests during Sunday’s Freddy Fixer Parade — and detectives are still investigating a late-afternoon shooting that took place on Orchard Street after the parade had ended, and that left an 18-year-old injured. City Police Chief David Zannelli provided the Independent with those crime-and-arrest updates in a phone interview Monday. No shootings took place at the Dixwell Avenue parade itself, which kicked off at Dixwell Avenue and Bassett Street at around 1:30 p.m. There was, however, an apparent exchange of gunfire at 5:47 p.m. on Orchard Street near Goffe Street. Zannelli said police received a ShotSpotter alert about a shooting near the 600 block of Orchard. “We learned from the community that there was an argument between two men prior to the gunfire erupting.” Soon thereafter, police located a shooting victim near Dixwell Avenue and Charles Street. The 18-year-old victim had been shot twice, in the leg and the foot. The man was transported to the hospital, and his injuries were deemed to be non-life-threatening. “We’re not sure what the motive is,” Zannelli said, “but we are getting a lot of information” and investigators are making progress. He said that police are not sure if this shooting was related to the parade. Police did, however, make three gun-related arrests at the parade itself. The first took place at around 3:30 p.m. near Dixwell Avenue and Henry Street. Zannelli said that, at the parade, “officers received information that a male was carrying a handgun in a backpack.” A patrol officer was able to locate the individual — a 14-year-old — and found a handgun in his backpack. The 14-year-old was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, and the firearm was seized. The second and third arrests took place at around 4 p.m. near 316 Dixwell Ave. Zannelli said the police department’s intelligence unit, shooting task force, and narcotics unit received information that “there might be violence at the parade” involving a group of people familiar to police. Zannelli said that police “saw a group known to us enter the apartment complex” near 300 Dixwell Ave. Police stopped those individuals for trespassing on the property. Police wound up arresting two of those individuals — a 21-year-old Hamden man and a 21-year-old New Haven man — for allegedly possessing “illegal hand guns” in a backpack. The 21-year-old Hamden man allegedly had a gun with “an extended mag” and the 21-year-old New Haven man allegedly had a gun with a “50-round drum, which is extremely dangerous.” Each man was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, carrying a pistol without a permit, possession of a high capacity magazine, theft of a firearm, and criminal trespassing in the third degree. Each is currently being held on a $750,000 bond. The post 3 Gun Arrests At Parade, 1 Shooting After appeared first on New Haven Independent. ...read more read less
