e the identity, gender and age of the child are not known at this time as that will be made officials by the Arapahoe County Coroner, CPW Spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said in a press conference late Saturday evening that the child's body was recovered at 10:20 p.m. One child dead after drowning at Cherry Creek State Park, per CPWThe initial investigation began at around 4 p.m. when beachgoers at the state park had noticed the child in the water and having difficulty swimming.Van Hoose telling the media two kids were on a float in the water, one was able to walk back, the other, stayed on the float and later was unable to make it back to shore.Rescue crews, including South Metro Fire Rescue were on scene in a matter of minutes as they were conducting water rescue training at the state park Saturday afternoon.While details are limited about what the child's supervisors were doing at the time of the incident, Van Hoose said the child was not wearing a life jacket, and stressed the importance of everyone, regardless of swimming ability, wearing a life jacket while in the water.Van Hoose adding because of the heat on the shore and the cold water temperatures, the body can go into shock and could prevent a person's ability to swim.At 11:46 p.m. Saturday, CPW sent out the following press release:The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Marine Evidence Recovery Team (MERT) recovered a child drowning victim from the Cherry Creek Reservoir swim beach area Saturday evening. Witnesses told CPW two children were on a float recreating near the Cherry Creek State Park swim beach around 4 p.m. One child left the float in shallow water and walked back to shore. The other child continued floating into deeper water on the reservoir. At 4:25 p.m., witnesses saw the child go under the water. A CPW seasonal park ranger and other park visitors jumped into the reservoir to attempt a rescue. South Metro Fire Rescues dive team was conducting water rescue training in another part of the park, quickly responded to the scene. Within five minutes, divers were searching near the swim beach. The West Metro Fire dive team and Arapahoe County Sheriffs Office also assisted in the response. The victim was recovered by CPW MERT at 10:20 p.m. Neither child on the float was wearing a life jacket.The Arapahoe County Coroner will be the point of contact for the identity and age of the child.No official cause of death has been given at the time of writing, Cherry Creek State Park will be open for normal hours on Sunday, June 7.Original Story:A recovery operation is now underway at Cherry Creek State Park for a person missing in the water, according to officials with Colorado Parks Wildlife.First responders were called to the park's swim beach just before 4:30 Saturday afternoon.South Metro Fire Rescue said its dive team was on-scene at the swim beach searching for the person who was reported missing.Rescuers were also using sonar equipment to assist.Multiple agencies, including the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office were also responding to the incident.CPW told Denver7 the agency has the ability to search through the night.
