INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Each and every Saturday, WISH-TV highlights a local company together with our partners at Indiana Grown.
This week, Brianna Tull with Dirt and Lace Flower Company in Pendleton, joined WISH-TV at Daybreak.
What started as a pan
demic pastime of growing and gifting flowers has bloomed into the business Tull holds near and dear.
Tull, a nurse of 13 years, says she turned to growing flowers as a form of self-care. Dirt and Lace launched in 2022, though it definitely came with challenges – both with business and with farming.
As a field grower in Indiana, her season runs from May through October, between the last and first frost dates. The region’s unpredictable weather demands constant attention, including applying and removing row covers to protect the flowers. With sufficient water and full sun, Tull says her flowers flourish despite the climate challenges.
“There’s been a learning curve — for growing, running a business, and balancing it while working as a nurse,” Tull said. “But it’s been fun.”
Beyond cultivating fresh flowers, Tull presses the blooms to craft unique floral jewelry and dries others to create cloches and wine stoppers. She says she preserves the vibrant colors of her dried flowers by keeping them in low light and low humidity, sometimes using silica gel — a sand-like substance that locks in shape and hue.
Tull’s flowers and crafts can be found in multiple spots, including The Good Co. in New Castle, the Ohana Soda Lounge in Maxwell, Indiana, and Lavender Lane Farmstead in Pendleton.
She also makes weekly appearances at the Pendleton Farmers Market from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturdays.
