A man went missing in the Delaware River overnight after diving in for a nighttime swim with a friend, police said. According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incident happened just after midnight, as about 20 people — on four separate boats — gathered near the intersec tion of Linden and Delaware avenues in Northeast Philadelphia before launching boats into the river. Then, at some point in the evening, while the boats were near Hawk Island in New Jersey, Coast Guard officials said two of the boaters dove into the river for a swim. L to R: Carlo Gill, a photo of the Delaware River As crews searched the waters off of Pleasant Hill Park in Torresdale, Bucks County, for Gill, one of his friends who witnessed him disappear into the water, told NBC10’s Neil Fischer that Gill said he couldn’t swim any longer. “He swimmed out from the boat with my other friend,” said the friend, who identified himself only as Argeni. “And, the last word he told my friend ‘Hey, I can’t no more I love you.’ And, that breaks my heart because the last word he said was he couldn’t swim no more and I love you.” Still, Argeni said, he hopes his friend is found alive. “I hope to God we are going to find him alive. I still have hope because God is great,” he said. Officials said boats have been searching the water since the report came in early Friday and the Coast Guard had been scanning the area from helicopters. The rescue effort has since turned into a recovery operation, officials said. Friday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard East District announced the search for Gil was suspended pending further developments after about 11 hours. However, New Jersey State Police later confirmed with NBC10 that the search operations remained ongoing. This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as new information becomes available. ...read more read less
