Jun 05, 2026
City police are looking for a man who allegedly yelled “baby killers” and “go back where you belong” to a group of three Jewish men downtown before slapping a yarmulke off of one of their heads.
The New Haven Police Department (NHPD) posted a press release about that incident at 6:45 p.m
. Thursday on the social media site X.
The press release states that, on Tuesday at around 4:30 p.m., city police officers were approached by two victims regarding an incident that had occurred about 40 minutes prior at the 200 block of Crown Street.
Two of the victims — a 41-year-old man from New Haven and a 24-year-old man from New Jersey — and a third man, who wished to remain anonymous, said that, “while they were standing on the sidewalk talking amongst themselves, a man they did not know began yelling at them from about 20 feet away. The man appeared agitated and began yelling statements such as ‘get out of my city,’ ‘baby killers,’ ‘go back where you belong’ and asking if they liked ‘genocide.’ The victims were visibly identifiable members of the Jewish community.”
The victims then said that the man approached them while still yelling, and that he smelled of alcohol.
“The male suspect attempted to shove a fourth person who was trying to intervene, threw a rolled-up newspaper at them, then pointed at the yarmulke one of the victims was wearing and slapped it off his head, causing it to fall on the ground,” according to the press release.
The suspect then walked away on Crown Street towards downtown.
“Personnel assigned to the Real Time Crime [Center] were able to use video surveillance to corroborate the victims’ accounts and capture video of the suspect walking away.” The above photo shows the suspect.
The press release states that a “Be on the Lookout” broadcast for the suspect was put out, but he was not located.
Officers are looking to identify the man involved and speak with potential witnesses.
