‘I can't no more. I love you': Crews search for swimmer lost in Delaware River
Jun 05, 2026
A search was ongoing early Friday after a man was lost in the Delaware River overnight after diving in for a nighttime swim with a friend, police said.
According to Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small, the incident happened around 1 a.m. on Friday, as about 20 people — on four separ
ate boats — gathered near the intersection of Linden and Delaware avenues in Northeast Philadelphia before launching boats into the river.
All of the boaters, who he said were in their 20s and 30s, rode out into the river for a bit, then, at some point in the evening, two of the boaters dove into the river for a swim.
However, he said, a man in his 30s — who officials did not immediately provide additional information on — that jumped into the water never came back.
As crews searched the waters off of Pleasant Hill Park in Torresdale, Bucks County, for the missing man, one of his friends who witnessed the man disappear into the water, told NBC10’s Neil Fischer that the missing man said he couldn’t swim any longer.
“He swimmed out from the boat with my other friend,” said the friend, who identified himself only as Argeni. “And, the last word he told my friend ‘Hey, I can’t no more I love you.’ And, that breaks my heart because the last word he said was he couldn’t swim no more and I love you.”
Still, Argeni said, he hopes his friend is found alive.
“I hope to God we are going to find him alive. I still have hope because God is great,” he said.
Officials said boats have been searching the water since the report came in early Friday and the Coast Guard has been scanning the area from helicopters.
However, the rescue effort has since turned into a recovery operation, officials said.
The effort to find the missing man, officials said, is ongoing.
