A new report is shedding light on what happened when a school bus hit and killed a young student in South Jersey last month. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released a preliminary report on the crash that happened on Friday, May 8 on Thursday, June 4. In the report, officials explain that a school bus was carrying 28 students who ranged in age from Kindergarten to fifth grade from Broad Street Elementary School as well as the 48-year-old driver. It was around 3:38 p.m. on May 8 when the driver was going northbound on Bennett Street in Gibbstown, New Jersey, and stopped just south of the intersection with Ashton Drive, the NTSB said. The bus unloaded students at this stop, officials said. A 7-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl got off and started to walk north on the sidewalk until they got to the corner to cross the street. As the two students started to cross Ashton Drive, the bus driver started to make a right turn onto Ashton Drive when it hit the boy, according to the NTSB. The boy, later identified by police as Hunter Smith, died from his injuries. The other students and the bus driver were not hurt in the crash.
