Anderson man convicted of murder in 2023 shooting of 15yearold
Jun 03, 2026
ANDERSON, Ind. (WISH) — A Madison County jury on Thursday found a 20-year-old Anderson man guilty guilty of murder, attempted armed robbery, and criminal confinement, the deputy prosecutor said.
The charges stem from the 2023 shooting death of 15-year-old Jullian D. Craig during an attempte
d armed robbery.
Judge Angela Warner Sims of Madison Circuit Court 1 will determine on July 7 the prison sentence of Donavan Harris, which could be up to 65 years.
Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Hanna said in a news release issued Thursday night that the conviction of Harris falls under the doctrine of “felony murder.” The legal principle holds participants responsible for a death that happens during the commission or attempted commission of certain serious felonies, such as robbery. The law recognizes these crimes as inherently dangerous and holds people who commit them accountable for foreseeable consequences, including a death.
Evidence presented at trial proved Craig was killed in self-defense by the victim of the attempted robbery, O’Terreyon Johnson. Craig was armed with a handgun and lying in the backseat of a vehicle driven by Harris when the pair lured Johnson into the vehicle under the premise of paying a debt.
According to court documents, Harris asked Johnson to enter the vehicle outside a home on West 15th Street in Anderson. Once Johnson entered the front passenger seat, Harris locked the door and said, “run that,” a slang expression used for forcefully taking possessions. Craig, who had been in the backseat, then sat up, cocked his gun, and pointed it at Johnson.
A gunfight ensued inside the vehicle. Craig fired four rounds, and Johnson fired one round. Johnson dropped his gun and ran from the vehicle. Craig suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest. Harris then drove Craig to a hospital, where Craig was died shortly after arrival.
A subsequent search warrant executed on Harris’ home revealed at least 25 grams of a substance preliminarily identified to contain fentanyl.
