A Pennsylvania woman is accused of faking terminal brain cancer to scam family and friends out of thousands of dollars. Vanessa O’Rourke, 37, was indicted on 15 counts of wire fraud in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and is currently being sought by the FBI. Officials said O’Rourke told her family and friends that she had been diagnosed with glioblastoma and claimed she needed money to help with her medical treatments. For months, O’Rourke also told family and friends that she needed to travel to Australia for an experimental treatment for her alleged cancer, according to investigators. Her family and others provided the money, and in April of 2016, O’Rourke went to Australia. During her trip, officials said O’Rourke engaged in a variety of leisure activities and did not receive any medical treatment. Officials stated that upon her return to the United States, O’Rourke then requested that her friends and family organize two fundraisers on her behalf. A webpage was created, and a benefit event was held at a local restaurant in Pennsylvania. These efforts led to many people making donations for her alleged cancer treatment, officials said. O’Rourke reportedly used those funds to travel to Australia again in 2016, where she engaged in more leisure activities and received no medical treatment, officials said. A federal warrant was issued for O’Rourke’s arrest back on May 3, 2018, and she still remains at large. If you have any information regarding O’Rourke, you are urged to contact your local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate. ...read more read less
