Escondido police investigate deadly hitandrun caught on camera
Jun 01, 2026
Security camera footage obtained by NBC 7 may help investigators piece together what happened in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Escondido on Friday night.
The collision happened around 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of 9th Avenue and South Redwood Street. The Escondido Police Department is investi
gating the crash, which left a man dead. His identity has not been released pending notification of family members.
Video from a nearby business appears to show the man walking near the roadway while holding a light, possibly a flashlight or a phone. The footage suggests he was looking for something near the sidewalk before moving into the center of South Redwood Street near 9th Avenue.
Auto shop owner Brian Murison said he did not witness the crash but later reviewed security camera footage that captured the incident.
“Ah … insane,” Murison said.
According to the video, the man was in the roadway for only a few seconds before he was struck by an eastbound black sedan. The impact appeared to throw him into the air.
Murison said the circumstances leading up to the collision were unusual.
“Very Bizarre. Why he stopped in the middle of the street I don’t know,” Murison said.
The same video appears to show a westbound truck driving over the man after he fell to the ground. From the footage, neither vehicle appeared to stop.
“We see accidents here all the time all the time. The person that hit him, it’s not their fault, but they shouldn’t have ran,” Murison said.
Investigators are also exploring whether another vehicle may have been involved in the crash.
NBC 7 also obtained a second security camera recording from a nearby business. The sound captured in that video may help investigators determine whether the man was struck by the truck.
Both business owners told NBC 7 that Escondido police had not requested either video.
“It’s blackout. He wore black clothes. He had a flashlight looking for something, but he shouldn’t have been in the middle of the street,” Murison said.
In the aftermath of the collision, three additional vehicles passed the man as he lay in the roadway, narrowly missing him and nearly causing additional crashes. Other drivers eventually stopped to help.
Investigators later located a black sedan not far from the intersection. The vehicle had been abandoned in a parking lot, and its driver’s-side rearview mirror was broken off, which may be consistent with the collision.
No arrests have been made as of Monday night.
