Youth flag football referee strangles coach in Franklin Twp., police say

A referee for a youth flag football league has been charged after he strangled a coach during a dispute over an on-field call, Franklin Township police said.
Officers were initially called to the Franklin Township Sports Complex on Pennsylvania Avenue at around 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 31, after
a referee apparently strangled a coach of one of the teams he was officiating at the time, police said.
After an investigation, police said they identified 47-year-old Edward McKinnie Jr., of Blackwood, New Jersey, as the referee who assaulted a 46-year-old coach from Newfield after a dispute over an on-field call escalated.
According to witnesses at the scene, bystanders had to intervene to separate McKinnie and the coach, police said.
The coach was treated by Gloucester County EMS at the scene, but the extent of his injuries are unknown at this time.
McKinnie was placed under arrest and charged with second degree aggravated assault, police said. He was processed and released from jail as he awaits a future court appearance.
