‘Everyone is devastated,' apartment owner says gas line ruptured during soil sample boring
May 29, 2026
The owner of the Dallas apartment building destroyed in an inferno on Thursday says an engineering firm was doing soil testing when a gas line was ruptured, sparking a five-alarm fire that killed at least three people and injured five others.
In a statement on Friday, Geoff Henley, an attorney re
presenting the owner of the Clyde Apartments, said a subcontractor was boring in the area when the gas line was hit.
The ruptured line ignited, and the two-story apartment building was consumed by fire. Dallas Fire-Rescue confirmed Thursday night that three fatalities had been confirmed and that five others were injured.
The search for victims continued into the night Thursday by hand and by drone. DFR Chief Justin Ball said Friday afternoon that there are no residents who are unaccounted for and that they have searched the debris with cadaver dogs and have not found any additional victims.
“The owner is shocked by this outcome and likewise mourns this outcome. We still do not know how many perished in this fireball,” Henley said. “The owner has had the property for about a decade and his management team was close to several of these tenants. Everyone is devastated.”
Dallas Fire-Rescue firefighters work to extinguish an apartment complex fire in the 400 block of East 9th Street, Thursday, May 28, 2026, in Dallas.
The apartment building is currently part of a pending sale with an adjacent property, and the soil sampling was being done by the buyer.
Henley said the building’s owner has a management team assisting tenants with their needs and is working with fire investigators to determine what took place. Henley said they have not yet been able to confirm with investigators whether the company performing the boring contacted 8-1-1 to locate and mark underground utility lines before digging began.
“If someone did not do a proper line locate here, it is beyond egregious,” Henley said.
The identities of the victims killed in the fire have not yet been confirmed.
The NTSB is sending a team of eight investigators to Dallas on Friday to investigate the rupture and gas-fueled explosion. Witnesses to the accident, or anyone with surveillance video or other information relevant to the investigation, are asked to contact the NTSB at [email protected].
