As we approach the upcoming primary election, Wasatch County voters face an important decision regarding who will manage our tax data, elections and county revenues. While both Republican candidates in the clerk-auditor race have municipal experience, a closer look at the actual mechanics of the jo b reveals why we must re-elect Joey Granger. Many voters understandably assume that the clerk-auditor role is strictly about running elections and managing records. In reality, the clerk portion of the job is only about 35% of the clerk-auditor job content. Administering of elections is about about 20% of the overall workload. Keeping council minutes, processing certificates, and other daily functions takes up the other 15% of the clerk’s time. The remaining 65% of the position is the complex, highly regulated auditor function. This critical role requires extensive knowledge of municipal finance, managing county-wide budgets, and ensuring that our intricate property tax data is correctly calculated and submitted to the Utah State Tax Commission. It is a safeguard for our county revenues and, by extension, our hard-earned tax dollars. This is where the contrast between the candidates becomes clear. Michelle Kellogg has served capably as the Park City recorder, and previously as Heber City’s recorder. However, a recorder’s skill set is naturally focused on the clerical side: managing municipal archives, records requests, and city-level codification. That background translates well to a traditional clerk’s office, but it lacks the heavy financial and regulatory auditing demands required at the county level. Joey Granger has spent nearly six years successfully navigating both halves of this dual role. She has proven her ability to handle the complex property tax system, manage state-level tax submissions without error, and protect county revenue while simultaneously running transparent, secure elections. We live in a fast-growing county where financial management is absolutely critical. We cannot afford the steep learning curve that comes with replacing proven fiscal oversight with purely clerical experience. Joey Granger has the specific, specialized experience that the modern auditor function demands. Please join me in voting to keep her proven leadership in office this June.
