Park City Councilor Bill Ciraco had the courage and conviction to vote against raising the salaries of Mayor Dickey and the council by some 100%+ at the May 21 council meeting. Nineteen mayors/council heads of comparable Western ski towns and local government make $50,000 or less. Our Park City may or will make $116,666, Council members $58,333, plus health benefits. What’s wrong with this picture? Don Rogers, editor of The Park Record, in his May 23 “Journalism Matters” column, called it for what it is: “It was just dumb.” This is public service, not a full-time job. The mayor and council are like the board of directors of a public company. They are not there to run the city, but to set policy. If they are spending so much time at it, they are mismanaging their roles. And oh by the way, for the city staff to say this “aligns with recent market corrections implemented by peer organizations” just doesn’t hold water. Nineteen ski community mayors and council heads make $50,000 or less? Old saying in business: “If you want to keep your bosses happy, give them as much of a raise as you can.” Looks like the inmates are running the asylum.
