Police in Philadelphia have revealed the identities of a man and an officer who were involved in a scuffle that led to a shooting in Kensington last weekend. According to police, 36-year-old Sgt. William Kolb was on patrol in the area of Kensington Avenue and Hart Lane around 10:22 a.m. on May 2 3, 2026, when he was flagged down by a person. The person pointed out a man who “he had been involved in a disturbance with” to Sgt. Kolb and explained that the suspect was armed, police said. Sgt. Kolb approached the suspect and a confrontation occurred before the suspect fled southbound on Kensington Avenue, police said. The officer chased after the suspect to the back of a building at the 2800 block of Kensington Avenue. During the chase, the suspect fell and a struggle ensued between him and Sgt. Kolb over the suspect’s weapon, according to police. Detectives reported that the suspect started to pick up the gun which is when Sgt Kolb fired one shot that hit the suspect in his wrist and chest. The suspect was taken to the hospital, where he is in stable condition, police said. The officer had their body-worn camera recording throughout the incident, and the PPD said that they have recovered other surrounding video surveillance as well. Eleven live rounds were found in the magazine of the firearm recovered and one live round was found in the chamber, police said. The suspect has been identified as a 39-year-old man and was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses. Sgt.
