SHELBY, N.C. – People protested in the streets of Shelby Friday evening, after video circulated online showing a Shelby Police officer repeatedly punching a woman. The officer seen in this video is now on administrative leave. The incident caught on camera happened around eight Friday morning. The video shows the officer take down the woman who police called “suspicious.” She appears to struggle with him, before he begins punching her. Another officer can be heard telling the first officer to stop. The chief of police says they are taking this matter seriously. In a news conference Friday afternoon, Police Chief Brad Fraser says, “I want to be clear. The inappropriate use of force is unacceptable and will not be tolerated by myself, the Shelby Police Department, or the City of Shelby.” After confusion online, the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office is making it clear the officer seen in the video is not one of their deputies. In a statement on social media, the agency wrote in part, “The conduct depicted is deeply concerning and does not reflect the standards expected of any law enforcement professional.” A community activist tells us more needs to be done. Sade Cannon says, “He (the officer) needs to get locked up. He needs to have accountability. He needs to offer an apology. Apology is not even going to be the minor break of what needs to happen, but he needs to turn in that gun, in that badge.” The Shelby Police Department has not named the officer. An internal affairs investigation is underway. ...read more read less
