SEPTA is set to install its first digital real-time arrival display at a bus stop in South Philadelphia, as part of a pilot program to bring more real-time information to riders. The first display will be located at Broad and Oregon, the transit agency said. Nine more devices are coming to bus s tops and to T, G, D, and M Metro stations across the system. The locations were selected based on overall customer impact and geographic equity. When first announced, SEPTA said the goal of the new displays is to ” bring riders clearer, more reliable service information right where they need it most: at the stop.” The screens, which are solar-powered and use e-paper technology, are unique because they are small enough to be mounted on a bus stop sign pole, the transit agency said. Each device is equipped with a text-to-speech button, enabling blind and low-vision riders to access the same real-time service information. The timing of the pilot aligns with the anticipated surge in visitors this summer, when Philadelphia hosts several events, including the FIFA World Cup, the MLB All-Star Game and America’s 250th birthday celebration. SEPTA is urging riders to provide feedback about where they would like to see these devices installed in the future by visiting septa.org/initiatives/better-bus/epaper. ...read more read less
