A 16-year-old is facing criminal charges for a downtown Salem shooting which sent another teenager to the hospital last week, the Salem Police Department announced Tuesday.The teenager turned himself into the Marion County Juvenile Department on the morning of Tuesday, May 26, police said in a state ment. He is now facing first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon charges for the shooting and will be held in Marion County juvenile custody. The shooting occurred Wednesday, May 20, near 200 High St. S.E., the police department said. Officers were dispatched to the scene around 6:20 p.m., shortly after it occurred.When they arrived, they found the victim, 17, who was treated by medics then taken to Salem Hospital. His injuries weren’t life threatening, according to Salem police spokesman Sgt. Jon Hardy.The suspect fled the scene before police arrived, and the Oregon State Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office joined the search using dogs and drones. They were unable to locate the suspect during the search, and detectives eventually identified him but were still unable to find him, Salem police said. The shooting was several blocks south of the Salem Area Mass Transit District’s downtown transit center, which was “minimally impacted,” according to General Manager Allan Pollock. Some buses were detoured.
