San Jose's new plan to help city employees afford housing

For people who work for the city of San Jose, it’s likely hard to actually afford to live in San Jose. The city wants to change that.
A new program that launched this week aims to provide city employees with subsidized rent at a building in downtown.
The Fay building in the SoFA District ha
s close to 200 one-bedroom and two-bedroom units for city workers at below market rate.
“To have a better work-life balance, to come to work by foot or by public transit, and just be able to live and work in the community that you’re serving,” San Jose Housing Department Deputy Director Sarah Fields said.
San Jose said city employees can begin to apply to one day live in the building.
