East Mount Airy neighbors wake to water shutoffs due to broken main

About 80 homes were without water in Philadelphia’s East Mount Airy community woke to find their homes without running water due to a water main break on Tuesday morning.
According to the Philadelphia Water Department, homes had water turned off after an eight-inch water main broke along the 1
100 block of East Slocum Street in the Stenton section of Philadelphia’s East Mount Airy community at about 6 a.m. on Tuesday.
Water could be seen pooling and mixing with dirt, creating a muddy roadway along the block as neighbors exited their homes to investigate the issue on Tuesday morning.
For Shahid Wilds, who lives along the block, the problem should never have happened as, he said crews were working to repair similar issues in that area about three weeks ago.
“If you’re going to do a task that’s set before you, you have to do it right the first time, so you won’t have this issue again,” he said.
He said he was up early after his neighbor called him to alert him to move his parked car due to raising waters along the roadway earlier in the morning.
“It was just, like, a pool of water,” he said. “I can’t believe this is happening and they just got finished with the work.”
As of about 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, crews were still working in the area to address the water main break.
