Chicago was on track Monday night to have its fewest fatal shootings in a Memorial Day weekend in at least 16 years.The sole death of the weekend — which runs from 5 p.m. Friday through 5 a.m. Tuesday — came after a toddler fatally shot himself Sunday, according to Chicago police.Jamonte Shaw, 2
, fatally shot himself inside a home in the 900 block of East 104th Street around 12:40 p.m. Sunday afternoon, and a 31-year-old man was arrested, police said. The toddler was taken in critical condition to Comer Children’s Hospital but he was pronounced dead at 1:31 p.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.Charges have not yet been filed, police said.At least 26 others were shot and injured over Memorial Day weekend, an uptick after 2025 saw the city’s least overall violent Memorial Day weekend in at least 16 years.In 2025, violence levels dropped dramatically from a three year uptick, when between nine and 12 people were shot and killed over the holiday weekend and total shooting victims ranged from nearly 40 to nearly 50, according to city data.Multiple victims in individual shootings lead countNearly 35% of the weekend’s injured were shot in two shootings between 1:30 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. Sunday.Officers in Little Village heard gunshots and found four teenage victims shot around 3 a.m. in the 2500 block of South Washtenaw Avenue, police said.All four were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition: a 14-year-old boy shot in the arm, an 18-year-old woman shot in the buttocks, a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg, and a second 16-year-old girl also shot in the leg, police said. The victims told officers the gunman ran from the scene; no one has been arrested.About 15 minutes later, another shooting left multiple people injured.Three people who had been shot arrived together at Mount Sinai around 3:15 a.m. One of them was a 29-year-old man who was shot multiple times and is in critical condition, according to police.The other two victims, a 30-year-old man and a 27-year-old man, were each shot in the leg and are in fair condition. The 30-year-old man was shot in the 2200 block of South Keeler Avenue in Little Village. Police have not released where the other two men were shot.
