Memorial Day observances take place across Bay Area

On Sunday, hundreds gathered at San Francisco’s Lands End to honor those who served aboard the historic USS San Francisco during World War II.
Organizers said the ceremony commemorated the sacrifice of the men who served aboard the USS San Francisco and their role in the 1942 Battle of Guadalca
nal.
The event was one of several Memorial Day observances taking place across the Bay Area.
Communities across the region are holding ceremonies Monday to honor military service members who died serving the country.
In San Bruno, the city’s annual wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Fallen Heroes Memorial. Afterward, the city will host a care package packing event for troops serving in the 101st Airborne Division.
In San Jose, Oak Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Park will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. that will include a flyover, rifle volley and music from the U.S. Air Force Band.
Walnut Creek’s ceremony is also scheduled for 11 a.m. at Civic Park and will feature commemorative music from the Walnut Creek Concert Band.
In Alameda, the Alameda Veterans Memorial Ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at Alameda Veterans Park. California Attorney General Rob Bonta is expected to speak at the event.
