Frantz is among nearly 50,000 people who were ordered to leave their home Friday morning following concerns about a compromised toxic chemical tank at risk of explosion at the aerospace facility in Garden Grove. She and her family filled up their truck with essentials and went looking for she lter. “We brought a cooler with some of the things from our fridge that we could grab, we’ve got a tent, chairs, we’ve got four cats and a snake, so hotels weren’t really an option,” Frantz said. She said since many evacuation shelters were full, they had to look for other options. That’s when they saw a post on Facebook from the Garden Grove Elks Lodge offering evacuees a place to stay. “We started communicating with Stephanie, the Mayor, letting her know that if people are interested in using it, we have it here. We’ll take care of our members, our neighbors, all of that,” Jackie Page, Club Manager for the Garden Grove Elks Lodge said. The American Red Cross for the Southern California region said right now they have 100 red cross responders assisting in relief efforts. Some of those volunteers include members of our San Diego and Imperial Counties chapter. So far, the Southern California region of the American Red Cross has opened at least six shelters for evacuees across Orange County. All of them are near or at capacity, according to their website. A spokesperson for the agency told NBC 7 right now they’re in contact with management partners to assess response needs and they’re adding more shelter locations to help those impacted.
