A 15-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the stabbing of a 21-year-old man following a graduation ceremony in Daly City on Friday, authorities said on Saturday. The Daly City Police Department said a fight involving multiple people took place on Westmoor High School campus, following the graduation ceremony at approximately 4:30 p.m. They added that the victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. The school district initially reported several suspects were arrested, but the police department later said a 15-year-old suspect had been arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and did not mention any other arrests. The graduation ceremony was scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Videos of this incident spread widely on social media. In the videos, a group of people in sweatshirts, with their faces covered, could be seen fighting at the school’s basketball courts. Many students in graduation robes could be seen nearby. One of the people in the fight could be seen stabbing another, leaving that victim bloodied. Police officers were then seen rushing in to intervene. In a statement, Westmoor High School’s Principal Victor Zou said that the victim has no relationship to the school district. “My thoughts are with all those impacted by this incident,” Zou said. “The safety and well-being of our students, families, staff, and community remains my highest priority, as well as our district’s.” It is unclear if the suspect is connected to the school. “I was here yesterday when I saw the police, they were surrounded — with the yellow tape around, they were collecting evidence,” said Tony Liu, a neighbor who has lived in Daly City for three decades. “The next thing I knew, it was [all] over the news, somebody got stabbed, surprisingly it was at a high school graduation, which shouldn’t happen,” Liu continued. Another neighbor, Josue Mejia, said his brother showed him the videos of the fight on social media. “There’s like videos all around about it, you know,” Mejia said. “And we wondered, like, why? That’s the main question.” Neighbors described the area near the school as relatively quiet, adding that they were alarmed to hear about the stabbing, especially on graduation day. “I was like, surprised you know? We never expect these kinds of things in school,” Mejia said. “You expect like kids to be protected, ” he continued. Daly City Police were on campus Saturday, keeping an eye out. The police department is still actively investigating this case. Police are asking for anyone with information about this incident to contact their Investigations Division at (650) 991-816. ...read more read less
