While the rain New Yorkers are dealing with is not expected to pose major flooding threats this weekend, New York City officials say they’re implementing new measures to prepare for potential localized flooding and storm impacts. After the widespread flooding seen across the city during the las t storm system that pushed through the area, city agencies are mobilizing and preparing for the potential of more flooding. NBC New York saw some of those preparations Saturday morning with the Dept. of Environmental Protection. Those workers were joined by Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D-New York City) as they cleaned out all types of junk that had been lodged in a catch basin. The city is making an effort to inspect and clear city infrastructure — like those catch basins — that are in flood prone areas as we get another round of potentially heavy rainfall. The DEP also brought in additional workers this weekend to support flood preparedness and response operations. Should flooding materialize, the NYPD will monitor traffic for any stranded civilians and will have tow trucks on standby in every borough. The city is trying to avoid another flooding headache like what was seen earlier in the week. Heavy rainfall causing flooding in all corners of the city, including areas of Brooklyn and Queens, where subway service was suspended as entire streets were inundated with water. That was on top of standstill traffic in some areas as cars maneuvered around flooded underpasses. All are things that Mayor Mamdani says the city hopes to avoid this weekend. “We want to make sure that we’re cleaning out every possible catch basin we can to make sure that we’re prepared for this, ” Mamdani told reporters. “Because I just heard from a number of small business owners. We’re not just talking about the flooding of basements anymore. We’re talking even about the flooding of first floors,” he said. The city says its Office of Emergency Management is leading enhanced coordination with the National Weather Service. Utility providers as well as city and state agencies are working to make sure specialized emergency assets are on standby and ready to be deployed if need be. New Yorkers are strongly urged to call 311 if they see any problems developing. ...read more read less
