By Brett Jordan, director Art has always been political. From the canvas to the stage, from movement to melody, the arts give voice to our deepest hopes, our sharpest anger, and our most tender loves. But of all artistic forms, music may be the most powerful — crossing generations, borders, an d languages to unite us and challenge us in equal measure. Musical theater carries this tradition with particular pride. From The Sound of Music to Hamilton, musicals have long been where history gets personal and protest becomes a showstopper. As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, I am directing for Bethesda Little Theatre a musical revue focused on the unique role of musical theater in defining American dreams and their disconnect from American reality. American Dream Deferred explores themes of dreams and aspirations, struggle and heartbreak, protest, progress, and hope.  Keith Flores, Aref Dajani, and Arthur Glover appearing in ‘American Dream Deferred.’ Publicity photo by Leslie Blaha. What is the American Dream? Why does it remain out of reach for so many? What can we do about it? The answers to these questions and more lie in songs from shows like Ragtime, In the Heights, Allegiance, Miss Saigon, and Suffs. They bring forth uniquely American stories with uniquely American messages of joy, frustration, and, ultimately, hope for a future where we are all able to live our dreams. A talented, diverse cast of 18 local singers and dancers takes on Broadway hits, traditional classics, and popular protest anthems. You will leave inspired and invigorated, not only to navigate the darkest times in our country but to continue the fight for equity and justice — for all.
