The Fort Worth Police Department provided an update and released body camera video on Friday of the weekend shootings involving officers.
Two suspects died, and an officer was injured following the two officer-involved shootings at the same scene in Fort Worth, early Saturday morning, May 16.
Police Chief Eddie Garcia said at about 12:05 a.m. in the 4200 block of Wiman Drive in East Fort Worth, officers were sent to the area after multiple calls and texts to 911 about gunshots.
“When officers arrived, they found a party that was going on in the area and heard more shots being fired. As officers were moving into the area where the shots were being fired, they encountered an individual that was armed with a handgun. At one point, the individual pointed the handgun at our officers, did not follow directions or orders to drop the handgun,” explained Garcia in a news conference after the shooting, posted to the department’s social media platforms.
Garcia said at least one officer shot the suspect, who died at the scene. FWPD said officers provided medical aid to the suspect at the scene until the Fort Worth Fire Department arrived.
No other officers were injured in that incident.
Chief Garcia said at approximately 4:15 a.m., while they were investigating the original shooting, a white SUV drove by multiple times, “at a high rate of speed.” FWPD said it appeared the driver was attempting to hit officers standing near their vehicles.
After a pursuit, police were able to stop the driver. The department said that as officers approached the vehicle with their guns drawn and giving commands, the adult male did not comply and grabbed an officer’s handgun.
Garcia said multiple officers fired their guns and hit the suspect. He died at the scene.
An officer was injured and taken to a local hospital, but it’s unknown how the officer was injured. FWPD said the officer is in good condition.
