A popular spot in San Jose is out thousands of dollars after thieves broke in, stole cash and left significant damage behind.
Video shared by the business owner shows two people smashing their way into Burbanks Bites and Billiards, a bar and grill on Bascom Avenue. Daniel Ramirez, co-owner of the
business, says it happened Sunday morning at around 6:30 am.
Owners told NBC Bay Area this is the sixth time this has happened to them in the two years they’ve been open; however, in the past, Ramirez says thieves have stolen bottles of liquor – this time, they got into the safe.
Between the damage and the money stolen, they’re looking at about $10,000 in losses.
“It honestly broke my heart, I teared up a little bit, the cash I have in there is to pay people, vendors, I had to do it out of pocket at some point,” Ramirez said.
A couple of businesses nearby told NBC Bay Area they’ve also been broken into in the past.
The taco spot next door said it’s happened to them a few times over the last couple of years.
“It’s starting to become a normal thing,” Ramirez said.
After hearing what happened, the community is now showing support to the business.
“It’s one of my favorite spots to go to and the food is absolutely amazing,” Daniel, a frequent customer, said. “They do so much to give this type of environment to us, and for them to do this, it’s just no respect, it’s sad that’s how society is.”
Now Ramirez is taking more precautions. He’s installed extra cameras.
“I think we have to do the gates inside, people see windows and they see gates inside and they get discouraged. But it’s sad that we have to come down to that,” he said.
Ramirez said he did file a police report. NBC Bay Area reached out to San Jose police but hasn’t heard back.
In a statement Michael Mulcahy, who represents this area, said his office will be working to make sure this incident and the area receives the attention they deserve.
