It was another scorcher across the tri-state on Wednesday, which gave way to lines of powerful storms that moved through just after the evening rush.
Severe thunderstorm warnings started popping up for central Jersey and the Jersey Shore after 4:30 p.m. as the storms arrived. The line of storms m
ade its way up through New York City and onto Long Island shortly after, with storms continuing to move through for several hours.
A flood advisory was issued for NYC as well, with 1-2 inches of rain expected in just a matter of a couple hours.
Some roads became impassable due to flash flooding. The Long Island Expressway was closed in both directions at the Cross Island Parkway in Queens. On the rails, part of the F line was dealing with suspended service due to station flooding at Jamaica-179th Street. The MTA said trains would not be operating between Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike and Jamaica-179th Street.
Some severe weather was expected as part of the storms, with damaging wind or hail, is possible. The best chance of storms lasts through midnight.
The storms came after a day in which heat index values once again soar near 100 for many. A heat advisory was in place through Wednesday for a swath of the region, including all five boroughs of New York City. Check the latest weather alerts for your neighborhood here.
Once the storms move out, we can turn down the air conditioning. Mother Nature takes dramatic care of that by Thursday.
It stays chilly through most of Memorial Day weekend, with some rain too.
Highs stay in the 50s Saturday and the 60s Sunday. Memorial Day itself could be the best bet for your outdoor plans, with just a few showers early in the day and sun in the afternoon.
