At a White House press briefing today, Vice President JD Vance offered his condolences to the families and community members affected by the deadly shooting at a mosque in San Diego, and mentioned his wife, Usha Vance, may have personally known some of those impacted.
Usha Vance was born and rais
ed in San Diego, where much of her family still lives. Vance said that whenever they visit her family and the area, they often dine at a restaurant located just minutes from the Islamic Center where the shooting occurred.
During the briefing, Vance mentioned he texted Usha shortly after learning about the tragedy to ask whether she might have known anyone affected.
“I texted her. I said, you know, would you have known anybody who was like involved in this?” he said. “And she said, absolutely, I would have known some people, or at least their parents, who might have actually used the services at this community center.”
Vance called the shooting “reprehensible.”
“I encourage every single American to pray for everybody who was involved and affected by it,” Vance said. “We don’t want that to happen in our country, and may God rest the souls of the people who lost their lives.”
