Camden County police check on seniors during dangerous heat
May 19, 2026
As dangerous heat settled over the Philly region on Tuesday, police officers in Camden spent the day checking on seniors and delivering water to people in need.
“She hasn’t had water for two days, so I made that my next stop,” Lt. Luis Gonzalez with Camden County Police said. “We usually
drop off one case, but I’m gonna drop off two.”
Officers said a woman reached out for help after being without water for two days. NBC10 rode along with officers as they responded to the call during the sweltering afternoon.
With a heat advisory in effect in Camden County and a code orange air quality alert issued for the area, officers went door to door delivering water, fans and air conditioning units to homes that were too hot.
“This heat is not helping out right,” one resident said.
Police said they have a list of 60 seniors they check on during days of extreme heat, with concern especially focused on elderly residents.
“How are you staying cool?” an officer asked one resident.
“Take a shower, sometimes I put water on my towel and put my head like this,” the resident replied.
Officers also checked on others spending time outside in the shade to stay cool.
“Take a little nap, enjoying the shade,” an officer said. “Alright. He’s good too?”
So far, Camden County Police said they have not responded to any heat-related emergencies. With more hot weather expected, officers said they hope that remains the case.
“We cant be everywhere at once, we do try our best, but if neighbors are able to help us out, give us a hand, team work is what this is all about,” Gonzalez said.
Police encouraged neighbors to check on each other during periods of extreme heat and urged anyone who needs help to contact Camden County Police.
