Marcus’ 4 a.m. Tuesday forecast
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Another round of storms is moving in this afternoon before a brief break from the wet weather.
Another stormy afternoon
Starting off quiet across the area with mostly cloudy skies as a weakening line of showers pushes in from Illino
is. A few spotty showers will be possible through the morning hours, but most areas should stay dry.
A cold front is approaching from the west, and storms are expected to fire up this afternoon and continue into the evening. We have another chance for severe storms across much of the state, with a Level 2 out of 5 risk. Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary threats.
Another concern will be flooding. Many areas across the state picked up 1 to 3 inches of rainfall, leaving the ground overly saturated. Flash flooding could easily occur with less than an inch of additional rain in some locations, especially with the potential for heavy downpours from this afternoon’s storms.
Meanwhile, high temperatures will still be very warm, reaching the mid-80s before the storms arrive this afternoon.
Welcome relief is on the way for the midweek.
Once the front clears south of the state late Tuesday night, we’ll be in for a stretch of quieter, cooler, and less humid weather. High pressure will settle in over the Great Lakes, keeping us mainly sunny and dry. High temperatures will top out around 70° on Wednesday and may not even reach the 60s on Thursday.
More rain for the holiday weekend.
Our break doesn’t last long. A large upper-level system will sweep through the northern portions of the country late in the week, dragging a warmer, more humid air mass back into the state and bringing renewed rain chances.
Friday looks to be the most likely day for rain over the holiday weekend. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon and evening hours, which could impact Carb Day. Some of those showers may linger into Saturday morning.
As for race day and Memorial Day, it doesn’t look like anything really organized will move into the state right now, but a few isolated showers and maybe a rumble of thunder can’t be ruled out for both Sunday and Monday. High temperatures will remain above average, hovering around 80° for most of the holiday weekend.
