In the leastshocking news today, Urban Meyer lost his grievance with the Jaguars
May 18, 2026
In maybe the most unsurprising turn of events, Associated Press and On3 reported earlier today that Urban Meyer will not be paid out the remainder of his balance from the Jaguars after losing his grievance with the team. Meyer was fired by Jacksonville after fulfilling the first year of his 4-year c
ontract.
Meyers 4-year deal was worth $36 million, but after 11-months he was terminated for more reasons than one. Had the independent arbiter ruled that the team fired Meyer without cause, they would have been subject to pay him more than $30 million. What was the “cause” you might wonder that had Meyer back on the market looking for work?
Under Urban, the Jaguars went a measly 2-11 with then rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence. That record alone would be worthy of an NFL head coach getting the axe. But Meyers record was the least of the Jaguars concern.
Jaguars kicker Joshua Lambo filed a lawsuit against Meyer and the team, citing Meyer created a hostile work environment for Lambo. The allegation was that Meyer kicked Lambo while he was stretching for the final preseason game. Lambo also claimed the team did nothing to stop the acts by Myer, but ended up dismissing the claim against the Jaguars. However, the lawsuit against Meyer still stands, per Duval County court records.
Meyer also drew immense criticism from the media and some of his players for hiring Chris Boyle. Boyle was not exactly welcomed with open arms because of his resignation from University of Iowa. The reason for his resignation was because of accusations he made racist remarks and bullying some of his Black players during his tenure.
Another wrinkle during Meyer’s short stint with the Jags was his absence on a team flight back home after a Thursday defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals. It was the teams fourth straight loss to start the season, and Meyer opted not to fly back with his team but rather stay in Ohio. Many speculated Meyers vacancy on the flight may have been for him to see family or close friends from his long stint as Ohio State head coach. Instead, he was photographed with a woman who was not his wife nor his age at a dive bar in Columbus.
Meyers time as the head coach in Jacksonville is looked at by many as the worst head coaching job in NFL history. Not many would dispute that opinion, either.
Meyer, 61, and is a member of the college football crew for Fox Sports.
